In Bohol, Philippines, Romero suffered abuse by his mother. He was yelled at while his mother held a knife to his neck threatening to kill him. The mother and Romero's sisters were living in someone's shed on the edge of a rice field. They slept in an area about the size of a queen-sized mattress. The children were sick, unkempt, covered in sores and malnourished, and not going to school. Romero was forced to draw water from the community well and carry it to different people's homes for money. Without adequate food or rest Romero was very beat down. He had an oozing ear infection that doctors said could have resulted in meningitis. He needed rest, food, and medicine, things not provided to him by his mother, and he needed love, tenderness and affection.

Today, in the care of a God's Kids sponsored orphanage, Romero is on the school honor roll. He's healthy and runs and plays and giggles. His ear infection has completely healed, along with the sores brought on by labor and exposure. We told him we were so proud of his making honor roll and that we wanted to give him a reward for a job well done. "Can I have a toy robot?" He was never a child before—he never had the right to want a toy; now he's earned a special one. He's learned to pray and to be social and he gets to be a kid for the first time in his life.
