DANIEL'S NEW HOPE IN CRACKLAND Everyone in the area calls it Crackland, but Daniel calls it home. It's an historic part of downtown Sao Paulo, Brazil, now infamous for drug trafficking, prostitution, and violence. Daniel and his family live in a building officially owned by no one and pay rent to the local mafia who manage the building. But something is now changing for Daniel and his family, thanks to their involvement in a unique street ministry sponsored by the American Bible Society working in partnership with the Brazilian Bible Society. For the last six years, Daniel has found new hope in CENA, a Christian community center at work here in Crackland. Daniel's favorite activity is soccer. Francisco, a CENA staff member, is his soccer coach and keeps tabs on Daniel's grades and performance in the 7th grade-if his school work slides, he can't play. We listened as Francisco led a short Bible study in Daniel's tiny apartment. Reading from Psalm 1 Francsico read, Oh the joys of those who do not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD and on his law he meditates day and night. Crackland is still an incredibly touch neighborhood, but with support from mentors like Francisco, organizations like CENA, and the Bible to guide him, Daniel is discovering the hope that his life can be something better.
